Unlike chemical screens, the zinc oxide used in natural sunscreens acts like minute mirrors to reflect UV light. So while it is on the skin, it will continue to do so. Chemical screens absorb UV and if not frequently topped-up, the UV can 'overflow' and can accelerate harmful free radical activity in the skin.

Some consumers believe they need a sun protection factor higher than 30. An SPF30, properly applied, will give better protection than an SPF50 that is not. And unfortunately, research shows that the higher the SPF rating, the less of the product most people use (in fact SPF15 provides about 93% protection against UVB, and surprisingly, SPF30 provides just 4% more). So, how the product is used is more important than its rating. Dermatologists recommend that sun protection is applied at 2mg/cm² to achieve the actual SPF on the skin. This is about a quarter to a third of a teaspoon of a properly designed sunscreen, applied across the face.

Niacinamide can also mitigate and to some extent help visibly repair damage from UV light and offset other sources of environmental attack, including the negative impact of various types of airborne pollutants.
